A Surprise — Ice Skating in New Jersey

Two people ice skating on a pond in the winter

If the increasing global warming is not reversed, there will be no more ice skating on this pond that my brother and I and family and friends enjoyed so very much each winter.

This pond was of special interest because the dark area at the far edge of the frozen pond is water that has not frozen because the natural spring that fed the pond is located there. This area never froze. When we ice skated, we avoided that area for fear that the ice near the spring was thin and would break. I learned recently that the name of the New Jersey township, Cinnaminson, where the pond was located is a Native American word meaning the place of springs. As a young person that spring was mysterious and a bit frightening.
