About

Mary Coelho

Mary Coelho brings to her watercolor painting and to her writing an academic and experiential background in both biology and theology, excitement about changes largely from science in the western worldview and a personal spiritual search.

Mary has an MA in biology, has taught high school biology and worked in a research laboratory. She has studied at both Union Theological Seminary (MDiv) and Fordham University (PhD in historical theology) and worked as Co-director of the Programs in Spiritual Direction at the Center for Christian Spirituality at General Theological Seminary in New York City. Mary has taught a number of workshops on the integration of changes in our worldview, sometimes called the New Story and its integration with western contemplative/mystical tradition.

In addition to the books, articles and the pamphlet described on this website, she is coauthor with Rev. James Neufelder of Writings in Spiritual Direction by the Great Christian Masters. She has been a member of the Steering Committee of the Friends Committee on Unity with Nature and has been on the board of The American Teilhard Association.

Mary has been a watercolor painter for more than thirty-five years, winning some prizes and exhibiting her work widely including single person shows at Mercy by the Sea on Madison, CT; Clare Gallery in Hartford, CT; Friends Meeting at Cambridge, Cambridge, MA; and Pendle Hill in Wallingford, PA. She has been a signature member of the Northeast Watercolor Society and the Katherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club and a member of the Cambridge Art Association.
